It’s the first question almost every guest asks, and it’s a good one. If you’ve never flown in a small aircraft, a gyroplane can look a little unusual. The good news: gyroplanes have some of the most forgiving flight characteristics of any aircraft, and every flight we fly is planned with safety first.
Here’s what makes gyroplanes so stable, what we do before every flight, and what to expect so you can relax and enjoy the view over Kona.
Why Gyroplanes Are So Forgiving
A gyroplane’s big top rotor isn’t driven by the engine. It spins freely as air flows through it, and that spinning rotor is what keeps the aircraft in the air. That simple design brings some real advantages:
- The rotor keeps turning: even if the engine were to stop, the rotor keeps spinning on its own, allowing a slow, controlled descent and a short landing.
- No traditional stall: airplanes can stall if their wings slow down too much. A gyroplane’s rotor keeps flying at slow speeds, which is a big part of why it feels so steady.
- Smooth in a breeze: the spinning rotor helps soften bumps, so the ride feels stable and controlled.

What We Do Before Every Flight
Safety isn’t just built into the aircraft. It’s built into how we fly:
- Pre-flight inspection: every aircraft is checked before every flight.
- Weather check: we review the wind and weather before each departure and only fly when conditions are right.
- A certified instructor: you fly with an FAA-certified flight instructor in a dual-control aircraft, so an experienced pilot is at the controls the whole time.
- A relaxed briefing: before takeoff, you’ll get a walkthrough of the aircraft, your seat, your headset and what to expect in the air.
Open-Air or Enclosed: Choose Your Comfort Level
We fly two AutoGyro models. The MTO Sport is open-air, with the wind on your face and nothing between you and the view. The Cavalon is fully enclosed with side-by-side seating, a great choice if you’d feel more at ease with a cockpit around you. Both are flown with the same care.
“Hands down one of the coolest experiences I’ve had in the sky! This was my first time in a gyroplane & it did not disappoint!”

What If I’m Nervous?
You’re in good company. Many of our guests have never been in a small aircraft before. Your instructor will talk you through each part of the flight, keep the pace relaxed and check in with you throughout. Most guests tell us the nerves disappear within the first few minutes, once the coastline opens up below.

Gyroplane Safety FAQs
Who flies the gyroplane?
Your FAA-certified instructor flies, and you can follow along on the controls.
What happens if the weather isn’t good?
We only fly when conditions are right. If the weather doesn’t cooperate, we’ll work with you to find a new time. However, Kona offers over 330 flyable days per year.
Are there weight or age requirements?
Yes. Gyroplanes have weight limits for safety and balance. See our FAQs for current requirements, or call us and we’ll help.
Do I need to wear anything special?
Comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes. We provide your headset, and loose items stay on the ground.
