Picture this: you lift off from Kona International Airport, the coastline opens up beneath you, and the Pacific turns every shade of blue. Black lava fields stretch toward the mountains, and in winter, humpback whales surface just offshore. That’s a gyroplane flight over the Big Island, and it’s unlike anything else you can do in Hawai‘i.

If you’ve never heard of a gyroplane, you’re not alone. This guide covers what a gyroplane is, how it compares to a helicopter tour, how safe it is, and what to expect on a flight with Fly Gyros Hawaii in Kailua-Kona.

What Is a Gyroplane?

A gyroplane (also called a gyrocopter or autogyro) is a small aircraft with a large rotor on top, like a helicopter, and a propeller at the back that pushes it forward, like an airplane. The big difference: the rotor isn’t powered by the engine. As the gyroplane moves forward, air flowing up through the rotor keeps it spinning, and that spinning rotor creates the lift that carries you.

The design dates back to 1923, when Spanish engineer Juan de la Cierva flew the first autogyro. A century of refinement later, modern gyroplanes are simple, smooth and remarkably stable, which makes them one of the best ways to see Hawai‘i from the air.

Gyroplane vs. Helicopter Tour: What’s the Difference?

Helicopter tours are a Big Island classic. A gyroplane flight offers something different: a private, personal flight that feels closer to flying itself. Here’s how they compare:
